The once-publicly close relationship between former President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk is now teetering on the brink of complete collapse, becoming a focal point of public attention. Amidst this volatile situation, Kayleigh McEnany, former White House press secretary and current co-host of Fox News‘s Outnumbered, has offered a striking observation, claiming that Donald Trump chose “the high road” during this turbulent “breakup.”
In a segment on Friday morning’s show, McEnany praised the former president, echoing fellow Fox News host Jesse Waters from the previous night. She emphasized that Trump didn’t publicly “roast” Musk, instead focusing on economic issues, posting only five tweets about the economy rather than attacking Musk.
However, the reality of the situation reveals a far more intense escalation between these two powerful figures. Trump initiated the latest chapter in their feud during a press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Thursday, June 5. There, he accused Musk of having “Trump derangement syndrome” for criticizing his “Big Beautiful Bill.” He also candidly admitted: “Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore.”
Musk, not one to back down, quickly retaliated. Just hours after Trump‘s statement, Musk dropped a “big bomb” on X: accusing Trump of being “in the Epstein files.” This move by Musk came after days of public sparring over Trump‘s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which Musk had previously called an “abomination.”
In response to Musk‘s “bomb,” Trump took to Truth Social to unleash further jabs. He wrote that he was considering “terminating Elon’s government subsidies and contracts.” In a follow-up post, Trump even referenced Musk‘s departure from a DOGE-related position (an unclear reference, likely implying an advisory role or position tied to the Trump Organization, not Dogecoin itself), accusing Musk of “wearing thin” and claiming he had personally asked him to leave, despite their previous amicable portrayal of Musk‘s departure.
Since those harsh words, Musk has remained relatively quiet about Trump, with only a cryptic follow-up post on X: “Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.”
In her Outnumbered segment on Friday morning, McEnany expressed hope that the two men could reconcile for the good of the country. “Let’s hope that for the good of the country… these people come together,” she said. “Because the richest man in the world and the most powerful man in the world can obviously have quite a partnership for the behest of the American people.”
However, the likelihood of Trump and Musk patching things up anytime soon appears increasingly dim. Senior officials close to Trump have revealed to The New York Times that the former president has no plans to call Musk after yesterday’s “X firestorm.” Sources with knowledge of Trump‘s conversations also added that he has been privately calling Musk “crazy” due to reported drug use, and he reportedly plans to sell his Tesla. The battle between these two “giants” seems far from over.
