Coronation Street fans say ‘surely not’ as they predict Ben Driscoll’s ‘real father’
Ben only arrived on the cobbles back in October alongside partner Eva Price and his mum, Maggie Driscoll
Coronation Street fans have been going wild with their theories after being given an insight into Maggie Driscoll’s past, but they have admitted ‘surely not’ when it comes to who she may have had an affair with.
Having made her arrival in Weatherfield in October, revealing herself as the new Rovers Return landlady after she helped her son, Ben Driscoll, buy the boozer as he got into financial difficulty after surprising his partner, Eva Price, with her former home.
It’s didn’t take long to pick up on the frosty dynamic between Maggie and Eva, but it was during Monday’s (December 8) episode of Corrie that light was shed on Maggie’s own past. She was seen celebrating her 65th birthday with a party in the Rovers, but a series of flashbacks gave a glimpse at the matriarchal character’s true self.
As Maggie prepared for her birthday celebration in the Rovers, the tension between Maggie and Eva was palpable as they clashed over their family. It was then that we saw the first flashback of the episode, in which a young Maggie was seen receiving presents on her birthday and after she gave her sons Ben and Finlay a games console, her husband Alan questioned where she had found the money for it and the pair clashed.
In another scene, Maggie and Alan continued to butt heads with Maggie saying Ben’s dad should’ve encouraged him to do better at a rugby game he lost. As they argued, Maggie went to hit her husband, who held back her hand to stop her. Ben walked in on them, and assumed it was his dad hurting his mum.
It was later that the final flashback scene showed a row between Maggie and her husband in which it was revealed that Maggie had previously had an affair. “Maybe that’s why he didn’t want you,” Alan fumed. “Saw you for the controlling, manipulative cow you really are!”
In a moment of rage, Maggie pushed her husband down the stairs, killing him, with the incident was witnessed by their youngest child, Finlay. Meanwhile, in present day, it appeared Ben was still very much led to believe his mum was nothing but an angel and raised a toast to her on her special day.
But as her killer secret was revealed, Corrie fans were keen to pick up on the earlier confirmation of an affair, as they quickly thought back to Maggie’s reaction to seeing something in Ken Barlow’s cabinet when Amy Barlow was helping her find a punch bowl at No.1 Coronation Street to use at her Halloween party in the pub.
And while some ruled out Ken as being the one who Maggie had an affair with, some think they know who else in the Barlow clan it could have been, with a suggestion that it’ll make them Ben’s father.
@cassandra2020 said: “Do now we need to work out who Maggie had an affair with and whether he’s Ben’s father. Surely not Peter Barlow #corrie.” @SouthernCazza1 replied: “When Maggie got that punch bowl of Ken’s, I reckon either she saw a photo of Peter- 60 now in #Corrie. Or Adam’s birth certificate, he’s a Baldwin really & saw Mike’s his Dad. So two possibilities- an either with either Peter or Mike. Making Ben either Adam’s brother or cousin.”
Over on Reddit, CombinationOk6846 posted: “So obviously in tonight’s episode with Maggie’s flashbacks we saw that she killed Ben’s dad, and also that she had an affair, indicating that he might not be the biological father. A few weeks ago we saw Maggie look shocked over something she saw in Ken’s draw which makes me think maybe Peter Barlow was the one she had an affair with. Don’t know how old Ben is supposed to be but I’m pretty sure Maggie and Peter are only 5 years apart in age.”
keirfergusart commented: “Yeah I think Peter (or one of Ken’s other sons) could be the father to Ben’s younger brother because they said the affair was 10 years ago, and Ben was 11 when his dad died.” Clairabel added: “According to the Corrie wiki, Peter was born 5th April 1965 (man looks good for 60!) so he could very well be the affair partner here.”
