Real reason Coronation Street’s David Platt calls mum Gail as fans left gobsmacked
Coronation Street fans are floored after finding out the reason David Platt addresses his mum by her first name Gail.
It’s fair to say Gail (Helen Worth) and David (Jack P. Shepherd) have a rather turbulent relationship over the years: from blazing rows to even David pushing Gail down the stairs.
Last year though, Gail left the cobbles after 50 years, with her exit airing on Christmas Day. After getting married for the seventh time, to Jesse Chadwick (John Thompson), the pair left Weatherfield for a new life in France.
Before leaving though, Gail said her goodbyes in emotional scenes between her and children Nick (Ben Price) Sarah (Tina O’Brien) and David as well as mum Audrey (Sue Nicholls).

In the past twelve months since she left, Gail has been checking in on her family, and last month, David found out he was expecting his first child with wife Shona (Julia Goulding), making Gail’s sixth grandchild.
What’s more, on Christmas Day this year, Gail will be making her return for a brief cameo when she sends a video message to the Platts on David’s birthday.
David has called her Gail for years
Meanwhile soap fans will recall that David has always referred to mum Gail by her first name, often leaving viewers puzzled. On social media, fans reckon the ‘reason’ is down to Gail previously considering aborting David – something he later found out.
One person mused: “I think it goes back to when he found out that Gail considered aborting him.” A second added: “He has called her Gail for years and years – ever since he discovered that she tried to abort him. Now THAT’S disrespectful.”
David actor Jack has also previously revealed the reasoning behind it. Taking part in a Q&A on X, then known as Twitter, Jack was asked: “Why do you call your mum Gail?” He replied: “David calls Gail ‘Gail’ when he doesn’t respect her.”

Talking about being a Platt on the ITV soap, David actor Jack previously said: “There’s a lot of us. And you can look at the kids now, and there’s three, so, there’s mine, Nick’s and Sarah’s replacements.
“I’ve got Lily – so, Sarah. Nick’s got himself, weirdly, in Sam, and Sarah’s got me – Harry.” We all get on, we all have a laugh, we do a little bit of work – just a tiny bit. And then we go home.”
