Coronation Street’s Gareth Pierce hopes for Robert Sugden romance in ‘future’ crossover
Ryan Hawley and Gareth Pierce are both confirmed for the ITV crossover
Coronation Street star Gareth Pierce joked that he’d be up for a Robert Sugden romance if the two soaps ever did another crossover.
On Monday (January 5), viewers will finally be able to sit down and watch the highly-anticipated ITV crossover as Coronation Street and Emmerdale merge for the first time.
This is to kick off the start of ITV’s “soap power hour” where both Corrie and Emmerdale will air every weeknight for 30 minutes, with no hour-long episodes going forward in a schedule shakeup across the network.
Gareth Pierce joined Coronation Street in October 2020, taking over the role of Todd Grimshaw from actor Bruno Langley. He first appeared on screen in the autumn of that year, with his first scenes airing after the character’s three-year absence from the soap.
Over recent months, Todd struck up a relationship with newcomer Theo Silverton who at the time was married to wife Danielle. When Theo divorced Danielle, his relationship with Todd became abusive with the latter being coercively controlled, and more recently, physically assaulted, by Theo.
Todd, terrified of his partner, set up hidden cameras in the apartment to film the abuse. Sadly, Theo found them and edited the footage to gaslight Todd into think that he’s the abusive one, not him.
Over the festive season, Todd was brutally attacked by Theo after Billy and Summer popped round to see them. Although Todd had proposed in the hopes of keeping Theo happy, Billy had put two and two together and decided to ask Aaliyah about abusive relationships.
Theo overheard, and later kicked Todd as he lay helpless on the ground. Although he made an attempt to flee, Theo arrived back at the flat and convinced him to stay. The pair then headed off to Debbie Webster’s Yorkshire wedding where Billy saw Todd’s bruises and also the deleted camera evidence – just in time for Corriedale.
When asked if there will ever be a second crossover, Iain MacLeod answered: “There are two stories that emerge from what you’ve just seen that pursue parallel lines, one in one show, and one in the other show. So there’s some degree to which those stories are in conversation with each other, but not literally, there’s no crossovers or anything like that.
“But, you know, in the MCU, all those characters exist in the same fictional universe and now the same is true of Emmerdale and Corrie, but I don’t think there’s going to be much beyond what you’ve just seen.”
Gareth then nudged Emmerdale actor Ryan Hawley who plays Robert Sugden, touching on if his relationship with Aaron Dingle doesn’t last, as he quipped: “But I would say that, you know, if it doesn’t work out…” as he teased a hopeful romance between the pair.
Speaking at the premiere in Bradford, Gareth shared: “I think what’s nice as well is that none of us are so heavily involved in the episode that you can’t actually sit back and enjoy it.
“Tonally Owen (Lloyd-Fox) and Duncan (Foster) as well, just zoomed in on those moments that ground it and give it humour, that dark humour, that sense of hope, even though for some, you know, their worlds are falling apart around them.”
