The Young and the Restless star Courtney Hope knows her character, Sally Spectra, very, very well. She has a handle on the people in Sally’s life, too. For her portrayal of Sally, who saw Billy’s recent betrayal coming a mile away, Soap Central is bestowing Performer of the Week for Y&R honors on the Daytime Emmy winner.
The Young and the Restless, Courtney Hope, Performer of the Week

Throughout their relationship, Sally has stood by Billy (Jason Thompson) with the patience of a saint and the fortitude of a heroine from a classic black-and-white film from the 1940s or 50s. Billy had an epiphany (or so we thought), and he got his priorities in order (again, so we thought). They reunited after Sally gave Billy yet another chance when he came back to her last year, promising to be the man she wanted. Sally and Billy launched Abbott Communications and were looking forward to making the media company the best it could be.
Then, Cane (Billy Flynn) came along and offered Billy control of Chancellor Industries, the company that his mother, Jill Foster Abbott (Jess Walton), sold to Victor Newman (Eric Braeden), sending Billy into a tailspin in the process.
Hope played Sally as a woman having to accept, once again, being let down by the man she loved. The actress’s body language read “here we go again.” She looked at Billy with a mixture of disappointment for him and sadness for herself. It’s as if Sally was thinking, “Why did I give this guy another chance to hurt me?”
The expression on her face betrayed the fact that Sally believed that Billy may not even see what he’s doing. Who’d blame Sally for walking out the door?
But, as our gal Sal is a loyal and supportive partner, she did her best to point out to Billy the folly of him teaming up with Cane. This wasn’t just for herself and for Abbott Communications. She loves Billy dearly and wants what’s best for him. Sally knows that Billy’s both traveling down the wrong road and he’s cruising down denial, thinking he has to be Chancellor’s savior.
Playing it carefully

Sally doesn’t want him to make a mistake, and with every moment Hope was on-screen, the actress conveyed that Sally knows Billy can’t see the forest for the trees in this situation, hoping not to set him off too much. She’s not interested in winning the battle for herself; she wants both of them to win the war.
When Billy referred to Cane’s business takeover, Sally hastened to point out that Cane was executing an “illegal” takeover. “You’re going to be an accessory to the crime,” she cautioned.
Mind you, Sally didn’t beg and plead for herself. She was trying to get Billy to think rationally and to keep his own long-term interests in mind. He insisted on being the one to save the late Katherine’s company.
“So, you have to save Chancellor?” she rhetorically asked. “It has to be you because it should have been yours all along?”
As a skilled attorney would, Sally argued her case, but Billy may have some kind of temporary insanity going on if he thinks that Sally would be okay with his justifying this mess.
The Young and the Restless, Billy doesn’t know best

“Are we in trouble here?” a clueless Billy asked, oblivious to what the future held for him if he got into bed with Cane and Chancellor.
“Billy, I honored our agreement,” Sally reminded him, hastening to add that Billy’s ambition seems not to have changed.
The Young and the Restless effectively used flashbacks to recap story points in which Sally was assured that Billy wouldn’t be doing to her exactly what is doing — letting her down. Ultimately, the flashbacks were unnecessary because one look into Hope’s soulful eyes and viewers can see just how much Billy has disappointed Sally.
The fiery redhead pointed out to her lover and Abbott Communications business partner that he’s apparently made his decision. “My decision,” she added, pointedly, “is going to belong to me.”
Billy’s not only unaware that allying himself with Cane could adversely affect his business life, but he could end up losing the best thing that ever happened to him in the process.
Kudos to Hope for always bringing intelligence, passion, caring, and commitment to her role as the unsinkable Sally Spectra!
