Peter Kay has revealed how his life was suddenly turned upside down after a terrifying health scare that left him believing he might not survive — and ultimately forced him into emergency surgery.
The much-loved comedian, now 52, has opened up in his latest book Peter Kay’s Diary, detailing the frightening moment he discovered he was suffering from a serious kidney condition that required urgent medical intervention.
According to Peter, the real gravity of the situation only hit home after he began researching his symptoms online — a moment he admits made him fear the very worst.
The comic legend is no stranger to putting pen to paper. He previously described it as a “massive pleasure” to reflect on his journey from obsessing over television to becoming one of the most recognisable faces on British screens in his earlier book TV: Big Adventures On The Small Screen.
That memoir marked his return to writing after a string of hugely successful releases, including The Sound Of Laughter (2006), Saturday Night Peter (2009), and The Book That’s More Than Just A Book (2011).
But this time, the story was far more personal — and far more frightening.
In Peter Kay’s Diary, the comedian recounts how a CT scan at his local hospital confirmed his worst fears.
“Fast forward 24 hours, and my suspicions were confirmed,” he wrote. “It turned out I had a big stone blocking the exit of my right kidney.”
Peter explained that while his urologist attempted to reassure him, the reality was stark. Emergency surgery was required to remove the kidney stone, along with the insertion of a stent to protect his kidney function.
“My pre-op blood tests confirmed his suspicions,” Peter added. “Apparently, my kidney functions were deranged — or at least that’s how the nurse delicately put it.”
Despite the shock, the diagnosis brought an unexpected sense of relief.
However, the pain that followed was anything but reassuring.
Peter described kidney stone pain as “legendary,” recalling how he began sobbing uncontrollably, letting out high-pitched sounds as the agony took hold — a moment he recounts with his trademark dark humour.
But the true horror arrived when the details of the procedure finally sank in.
“Then the penny dropped,” Peter wrote. “Oh my God. He means he’s going in through there.”
The realisation sent him into a spiral of panic.
“My world collapsed,” he said. “Red lights flashed in my head. That area is private land. Area 51. A camera won’t fit up there — let alone one carrying a laser.”
Although the surgery itself was ultimately successful, Peter admits the recovery was far from straightforward.
He recalled being told he wouldn’t need pain relief and that the procedure would be “a walk in the park” — a claim he quickly questioned.
“I don’t know which parks he walks through,” Peter quipped.
Describing the procedure in unfiltered detail, Peter admitted it was an experience he never wants to relive.
“It was painful, unpleasant, and absolutely dreadful,” he said. “A nightmare I never wish to repeat. Ever.”
Despite everything, Peter’s life eventually returned to normal — but the ordeal left a lasting impression, forcing him to confront his own vulnerability in a way he never had before.
