The announcement came just hours before Newcastle were due to face Leeds United at St James’ Park, with many predicting an especially emotional atmosphere under the lights.

Former Newcastle and England striker Alan Shearer shared the news on social media alongside a prayer emoji, while an England FA spokesperson added:
“Sending our best wishes. We’re all with you, Kevin.”

Liverpool FC also issued a statement of support, writing:
“The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC and Forever Reds are with Kevin Keegan following his diagnosis.”

Keegan’s former teammate and close friend John Anderson described the news as a shock. Speaking at St James’ Park, he said:
“It’s not the news you expect to hear. I’m sure every Newcastle fan, and every football fan, sends Kevin their love and best wishes.

“Not only did he resurrect this club — he did it twice. First as a player in the 1980s, and then again as manager. Tonight will feel even more special because of him.”

Widely regarded as one of the greatest English footballers of all time, Keegan’s playing career is decorated with extraordinary success.

During his time at Liverpool, he won three First Division titlestwo UEFA Cupsone FA Cup and a European Cup, and remains the only Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or twice.

He also enjoyed a prolific spell at Newcastle as a player, scoring 49 goals in just 85 appearances, before later returning to Tyneside to lead one of the most thrilling teams in Premier League history.

As manager, Keegan famously guided Newcastle from the brink of relegation in the third tier to the Premier League in just two seasons, before narrowly missing out on the title in 1996 after holding a 13-point lead — a campaign forever remembered for his emotional “I would love it if we beat them” outburst aimed at Sir Alex Ferguson.

He later went on to manage England, taking over as full-time national coach in 1999. His squads featured stars such as Alan Shearer, David Beckham, Sol Campbell, Gary Neville and David Seaman, while he also handed senior debuts to Tim Sherwood and Ray Parlour.

Keegan resigned from the England role in October 2000 following a defeat to Germany in a World Cup qualifier.

Across his club career, Keegan scored 204 goals in 592 appearances, adding 21 goals in 63 caps for England.

Away from football, the much-loved figure is a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He has been supported throughout his hospital stay by his wife Jean, whom he has been married to for 51 years, along with their close family.

As treatment now lies ahead, the football community has united behind one of its most cherished icons — returning the devotion Keegan gave to the game throughout his extraordinary life.
