Amy Madigan is the first big winner of the night at the 2026 Oscars, taking home the Academy Award for best supporting actress.

The 75-year-old actress won the prize for her role as the villainous Aunt Gladys in Weapons.

Madigan, who was previously nominated in the same category back in 1985 for her role in Twice in a Lifetime, looked stunned after hearing last year’s winner Zoe Saldana call her name.Amy Madigan gushes over husband Ed Harris in Oscars 2026 speech a

“This is great,” Madigan said at the start of her speech,.

She then spoke about planning her Oscar speech the previous evening while shaving her legs in the shower before thanking Weapons director Zach Cregger and her fellow nominees in the Best Supporting Actress category – Sentimental Value stars Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Wunmi Mosaku of Sinners and One Battle After Another‘s Teyana Taylor.

She closed out by thanking her daughter Lilly and her husband Ed Harris, who is a four-time nominee himself for his roles in films including Apollo 13, The Truman Show, Pollack and The Hours.

She was the lone nominee for Weapons at the 2026 Oscars and is one of only a handful of actors to have collected an Oscar for their work in a horror film, joining the likes of Kathy Bates in Misery, Ruth Gordon in Rosemary’s Baby and Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs.

Madigan picked up the Critics’ Choice Award and Actor Award for her work in Weapons earlier in the season, and had also been nominated for a Golden Globe.

She spoke with PEOPLE about her the hard work that has gone into her lengthy career after learning about her nomination back in January.

“It just means that you can have a long career. And I’ve had a long career and I’m continuing to do that,” Madigan said at the time.

She went on to say: “People always say, ‘If you have a dream, follow it,’ et cetera, but those are true things when actors and writers and directors get up there and say that because it’s a long, arduous trip, it takes a lot of work. Don’t be deterred. And it’s really true. When a good piece of material comes by, the actors, they want to grab it by the throat. It’s exciting. That’s why we do what we do. So it’s all been kind of a whirlwind, but very exciting.”
