What happened to Arthur Shelby in Peaky Blinders?

The film essentially closed the door on the current generation of Shelbys, who met their demises in various ways.

Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) is taken out by his beloved younger brother Tommy before the events of the film.

Tommy finally got the peace he’d been craving for so long after he too died. Prior to this, Tommy was living in exile in an empty mansion with the ghosts of his loved ones and his last true friend, Johnny Dogs (Packy Lee).

Peaky Blinders fans have been left divided with the ending of The Immortal Man(Image: NETFLIX)

The Immortal Man ended with the sun rising on a new era of the Shelby family with Duke at the forefront as the new leader of the infamous Birmingham gang.

However, the conclusion to Steven Knight’s epic love letter to Birmingham has left audiences divided.

One fan on Reddit posted: “Weak film, weak ending and will ruin the franchise with 2 new seasons to come. I wont be rushing to watch Barry Keoghan in a lead role. Maybe Alfie Solomons needs to become the main character.

“It wont have the same wow factor it would have had with Tommy Shelby, they’d have been better with Michael becoming the lead character [sic].”

While a second posted on X (formerly Twitter): “As much as i loved seeing him again leaving it at the series ending would of been sm more satisfying.”

A third noted: “With most of the previous cast gone ( where was Alfie? ) , it was missing a lot..5/10. Pretty predictable really.”

However, others were more positive about it as one person: “Cillian Murphy dusting off the cap again? Yes please. After that teaser, this was worth the wait. Peaky Blinders forever!”

A second noted: “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man out now! Cillian Murphy is legend. Loving the vibes already.”

While a fourth said: “Peaky Blinders is stepping into a whole new level with The Immortal Man, and the anticipation is unreal.

“If it carries the same intensity and storytelling depth, this could be an absolute masterpiece. The legacy of the Shelby family isn’t fading anytime soon.”

Someone reflected on the disappointment towards the film: “I think a lot of people just wanted the Tommy Shelby they knew. They wanted the family they knew. We are 10 years on after the last episode. Tommy is not gonna be walking around in a three-piece suit when he’s in an abandoned mansion living with his ghosts. This is a man broken even further than he already was. I think a lot of people wanted bravado and they got it but they didn’t get enough. The fact is in life, particularly in the life of a Tommy Shelby. A lot of people will be missing 10 years later where we find him. This is his purgatory. The final act was his redemption before the end.”

Although Peaky Blinders may have closed one chapter, the BBC has confirmed that the franchise will be returning with a new series charting the rise of the next generation of Shelbys.

The BBC has already given the show the go-ahead for two seasons, with work underway.
