Supriya Ganesh is OUT of The Pitt and Noah Wyle just dropped a warning fans weren’t ready to hear. After quietly becoming one of the most beloved faces on the show, Dr. Mohan is officially NOT returning for Season 3. At a recent event, Wyle didn’t sugarcoat it.

Supriya Ganesh’s departure is something of an “inevitability,” Noah Wyle said, because “emergency rooms have a high revolving door”

NEED TO KNOW

  • Supriya Ganesh will not return as Dr. Mohan in season 3 of The Pitt, PEOPLE previously confirmed
  • Noah Wyle said the cast will “miss” Ganesh, as he called her character “beloved,” but said the exit is an “inevitability”
  • “As writers, we’re hard pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically,” he said

Noah Wyle is speaking out about The Pitt saying goodbye to costar Supriya Ganesh.

Ganesh has played Dr. Mohan since season 1 of the hit HBO drama, and on April 2, PEOPLE confirmed she will not be returning for season 3.

Wyle, 54, said that Ganesh’s character is “beloved” as he weighed in on her upcoming exit.

“It’s an inevitability that’s going to happen every season with this show because as writers we’re hard pressed to figure out what a lapse of time we can have and keep most of the ensemble together realistically,” Wyle told Variety at the show’s April 12 PaleyFest event in Los Angeles.

“Emergency rooms have a high revolving door. As always, we try to bring in new characters or promote from within as we go through these cast changes and try to keep the storylines fresh,” he said.

“But obviously, Supriya has been a huge part of our show since the beginning,” Wyle said. “And I love playing with her and working with Supriya, and we wish her all the best in her next endeavors. We’re going to miss her.”

Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill also spoke about Ganesh’s exit at the event. “It’s sort of the nature of the show,” he told the outlet. “Unfortunately, the way the medical profession works, you come in, you learn, you move on, and we want to try and be as truthful to that process as possible. So we’re going to turn over our cast.”

“But I think it’s a great launching pad for people,” he added. “And that’s the best we can do.”

Ganesh’s character, Dr. Mohan, is in the midst of her residency and debating what her future will look like throughout season 2, so a change in hospitals would be a likely story for her and explains her exit ahead of season 3. The creative decision also mirrors the experience of doctors, nurses and students within a teaching hospital, which often includes a revolving door of staff.

Ganesh, 28, has yet to comment on her exit from the show.

While Ganesh is leaving, Ayesha Harris, who has played senior night shift resident Dr. Parker Ellis since season 1, was promoted to series regular for season 3, PEOPLE confirmed.

New episodes of The Pitt air Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
