The atmosphere in the UK House of Commons has once again been heated as MP Sorcha Eastwood, representing Lagan Valley in Northern Ireland, delivered a forceful and direct speech targeting Prime Minister Keir Starmer. She strongly criticised the Prime Minister’s personnel decisions and demanded that he resign immediately in the national interest.
A Warning About the Role of Parliament
Opening her remarks, Eastwood emphasised the name of the legislature itself—the “House of Commons”—highlighting that it represents “ordinary people.” However, she argued that ongoing debates over security classifications and procedures (such as DV, strap, and CTC) are deliberately confusing the public and discouraging scrutiny.
“Many people are being relied upon to believe that ordinary men and women on the street do not understand these terms, so that they stop asking questions… but I will make it clear to them,” Eastwood stated.
Direct Questions Over Peter Mandelson
Turning her criticism directly toward Keir Starmer, Eastwood challenged the Prime Minister’s decision to appoint Peter Mandelson as UK Ambassador to the United States. Although Starmer was not present in the chamber, she raised pointed questions about the appointment.
She described Mandelson in strongly critical terms, referring to him as a “twice-disgraced man,” linking him to past controversies, and quoting his self-styled nickname “the Prince of Darkness.” She asked: “Prime Minister, what is it about this man that made him so attractive that he was given such a privileged position representing the United Kingdom on the world stage?”
Warning of a Crisis of Democratic Trust
Eastwood warned that her constituents in Lagan Valley are increasingly “disgusted” by repeated political scandals and are unwilling to accept them as normal.
She went further, issuing a broader warning about democracy itself. She argued that if politicians cannot demonstrate integrity within the system, then “those in the shadows” and “predators on the corpse of what was once a great democracy” will rise and exploit algorithms to manipulate the public.
Call for Resignation
Concluding her speech, Eastwood stated that the government no longer has any credible justification to offer voters. “For those reasons, I believe the Prime Minister must go—not only for the good of his party, but more importantly for the good of the country,” she declared.
