High Potential star breaks silence on character’s future after season 2 finale
Fans were left concerned about what could happen in High Potential season 3
Now, Kaitlin Olson, who plays the lead role of Morgan, has talked about what happened to Nick in the most recent episode and what it could mean for season 3.
In the season finale, near the end of the episode, Wagner calls Morgan to tell her he has a meeting with someone with a possible FBI link, and the details are sent to him via text from his dad. Morgan agrees to meet him there, but by the time she arrives, she finds Nick slumped on a bench, severely injured and bleeding out, possibly from a gunshot wound to the back.
The action cuts to black before we can find out whether Nick will survive his injuries. Fans are concerned that it could mean Nick will die off-screen before the confirmed third season releases.
Olson has now admitted that Wagner’s character always played a big role throughout the season. Speaking to Variety, she said: “We wanted to have a little bit of a mystery, and we also wanted to stump Morgan. It was very important to me that she’s not always right about everything. I like that she’s a very intelligent person, and she’s also human and doesn’t know whether to trust this man. Who is he? Does he need something from her? Is he actually interested in her? So that was fun to explore and play with.”
By the end of season 2, Morgan has a raw emotional reaction to Wagner’s life being in danger. Olson told People magazine: “Now more than ever, now that somebody that she deeply cares about got really hurt or is potentially dead, everything changed.”
She added, “I mean, I think she just wants to put the lid back on, but it’s too late. That’s just always so much more fun to watch when things are completely off the rails, and it’s certainly more fun to play.”
As for what will happen to Nick Wagner, the actor was only signed on to play the role for one season as a regular. It is possible he could return in a guest-starring role, but fans worry it could mean he’ll die in the season three premiere.
Olson has said that nothing has been decided yet. She said: “It’s definitely being discussed (what happens next). Listen, this is a really big job. This is a show with multiple tones, and that’s not easy to do. I’m so particular about every single aspect of these scripts and these storylines.
“There is a lot on the table. There are so many places that we can go. We’re going to have to have some answers there pretty quickly.”
High Potential is also on the lookout for a new showrunner for the next season, and they will have a big say on the direction of the series.
If Howey is to return as Nick, it could be tricky with his busy schedule. He is currently filming a recurring role in season 5 of Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer, while he is also set to appear in the second season of Ransom Canyon and Prime Video’s Off Campus.
High Potential is streaming on Disney+.
