Coronation Street star teases Ronnie Bailey outcome ‘how far he’s willing to go’
It comes as he sets himself up to be involved in the possible murder of Carl Webster in the ITV soap
Coronation Street star Jonathan Howard has teased how far Ronnie Bailey is ‘willing to go’ as he sets himself up to be involved in the possible murder of Carl Webster.
It was last year that the actor made his debut in the ITV soap, and the new character’s arrival in Weatherfield is the first time viewers have ever seen Carl, with the younger half-sibling of Kevin and Debbie Webster having only been mentioned by name previously.
Not long into his time on the famous cobbles, Carl embarked on an affair with his sister-in-law, Abi Webster, and a fling with neighbour James Bailey has since followed.
But the biggest twist following his arrival on the cobbles came recently as ut was revealed that Carl is actually Debbie’s son, with the truth coming out as she took the blame for him following a horror multi-vehicle crash in January that caused the death of Weatherfield vicar, Billy Mayhew.
Carl discovered the news about his paternity as he admitted the truth, as he admitted his guilt over the shocking crash, and as he was letting Debbie take the blame after he coldly pulled her from the passenger side into the driver’s seat at the time of the incident to make it seem like she was behind the wheel.
Despite his actions, Carl’s still trying to get what he wants out of his mother – her money. While Debbie’s husband, Ronnie Bailey, foiled his first plan, which led to Debbie attempting to cut off Carl, he wormed his way back in as Debbie’s vulnerable state continued to unfold, only for her to have to see him on his way once again.
That was until last Thursday (April 23) when Debbie was seen sending her son on his way for the last time, having given him some cash to leave Weatherfield once and for all. But Debbie’s goodbye could end up being permanent because, as Corrie fans also know, Carl is among the five possible victims of a murder which is set to rock the cobbles this week, after a flashforward episode back in February confirmed who could be killed, and that it’s Betsy Swain who finds the dead body.
With each episode of Corrie this week dedicated to each of the possible victims before the victim is finally revealed on Friday (May 1), on Tuesday (April 28), it was all about Carl. He was seen preparing to leave Weatherfield but instead of tying up loose ends like most, he decided to rile up the likes of Kevin, Abi, Tyrone and Fiz Dobbs, and fellow victim Theo Silverton.
But Kevin ended up feeling quite smug as he took an opportunity to secretly take Carl’s envelope of cash from Debbie. However, Carl discovered what had happened and, out for revenge, headed to the garage where he started secretly tampering with the brakes of Kevin’s car, which was in for service.
Though things then took a dramatic turn, as viewers saw the footsteps of someone else, Carl had no idea before the trolley jack gave way, leaving him crushed by the weight of the car. But in another twist, Ronnie Bailey rescued him and appeared ready to drive him to the hospital. But will it be enough to save Carl? And who was behind the potentially deadly deed in the first place?
Asked if Carl has met his match in Ronnie, Jonathan told the Manchester Evening News and other press: “He’s a protector. He loves his wife dearly and he sees me just taking advantage and taking advantage and taking advantage. He’s like the silent warrior. He’s very stoic, not like my brother, aka my uncle. He’s not like Kevin, who’s going to be very explosive and shouty and then gets it out of his system and moves on.
“Ronnie’s a deep thinker and he wants to protect his wife and I’m putting her in danger and he sees that I’m taking advantage of that unconditional love. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out and how far he’s willing to go.”
Jonathan also admitted to be wanting to be part of the current murder storyline and teased: “I’m very lucky about the storylines I’ve had and I get to come in and play with the actors I get to play with. So if this was my time, then I would go out very proud and very grateful for the experience.”
