Coronation Street has finally confirmed more details of Cassie Plummer’s exit storyline. The character, played by Claire Sweeney, is set to leave the cobbles later this summer after three years.
We already knew that son Tyrone Dobbs’s long-lost biological father will play a role in her departure, with Claire now disclosing more about how things will play out.
Tyrone’s dad Ross (played by Ian Burfield) will enter the frame after being discovered by his daughters Hope and Ruby through family tree research, having used their father’s DNA. Ross then arrives in Weatherfield with the aim of building a relationship with his son.
However, Cassie feels devastated, Claire explaining to The Mirror: “She’d finally got the stability and the family life she’d been craving. And Ross comes in and he totally turns her son’s head.
“It took her long enough to be accepted. She knows that Ross is a wrong ‘un and she knows the impact he will have, not only on her and her security, but also on everyone around her. She knows what he’s about. He’s dangerous, but people don’t see it, because he’s very good at covering it up.”
The arrival is especially painful for Cassie given their dark history, as Ross was a client of her’s when she was a teenage prostitute and struggling with drug addiction, Claire calling him “a blast from her sordid past”.
“She’s in love with Steve McDonald and Ross is opening a can of worms that she doesn’t want Steve, Tyrone or anyone on the cobbles knowing about,” the star continued. “She’s started to be liked and to be accepted, so it’s really sad. But it’s the most fantastic exit storyline, I couldn’t have wished for more.”
Claire confirmed her exit earlier this year after landing a dream role of Miss Hannigan in the touring production of Annie.
Reflecting on her decision to say goodbye, the star admitted: “I think it’s the hardest job I’ve ever had to leave and my exit is very sad; I had a little weep over my leaving scenes. I got quite emotional.”
