Coronation Street star Beth Nixon has spoken about her character Megan Walsh’s dramatic fate for the first time. Friday’s episode saw justice finally served, as Megan was found guilty of grooming Weatherfield teen Will Driscoll.
The big scenes played out at the end of a week-long trial – and marked the end of Beth’s time on the ITV soap.
Now, speaking exclusively to Inside Soap‘s Soap Scoop podcast, Beth has shared why it was always the plan for her character to get her comeuppance.
“When I first took the role we didn’t know fully what was going to happen, how long it was going to be and how long she was going to be there for,” Beth explained. “But it was always that she wasn’t ever going to escape justice by being killed or anything like that.
“We always knew that she was going to serve her time. It shows the whole process of it. It’s quite nice, because it’s showing what all the family are going through – how they’re supporting Will and how it’s affecting them.
“It’s definitely important to show that, if you are being abused, then you can get justice. It’s really hard because it doesn’t always happen that way. But when [Corrie boss] Kate Brooks and the storyliners were making the story, there’s been a few cases recently where it’s happened and the victims have got justice.
“The female abusers have gone to trial and been sent down for about five or six years, which is about what Megan gets. So it’s important and it’s also mirroring real life in a positive way. Even though it’s obviously such a dark storyline, it’s just showing that it can happen.”
Despite the fitting ending for her sly character, Beth confirmed that she wouldn’t rule out a Corrie comeback for prison scenes in the future.
“I’d love any opportunity to come back,” she confirmed. “I loved it so much and I cried so much on my last day. It’s just such a fab place to work and I felt so blessed to have been given the storyline.
“I’d love Megan to bump into Lou Michaelis. Farrell [Hegarty, who plays Lou] is a really good friend, so I’d love to do some prison scenes with her. That would be fabulous. I think Lou would definitely put Megan in her place for sure!”
Beth joined the cast of Corrie late last year and news of her departure was revealed two months ago.
