Coronation Street fans have said they’re ‘not ok’ as they witnessed the aftermath of the devastating fire at Roy’s Rolls, which could have claimed the life of beloved cafe owner, Roy Cropper.

It was during Sunday’s (April 12) edition of the ITV soap that a blaze was seen breaking out at Roy’s home and business, with Mal Roper revealed as the culprit in a twisted revenge plot after he planned to leave Weatherfield following a string of fake reviews about his business, posted by Jodie Ramsey.

Roy had headed out with his niece, Nina Lucas, to a bat convention but after feeling unwell during the trip, he returned home to find the cafe had no electricity. Making the decision to close up early, Roy sent Jodie off home and headed to bed to try and sleep off his sickness.

But it meant he was completely unaware of Mal’s horrific actions. As Roy lay in his bed, Mal let himself into the cafe and set the place alight. Outside, Bernie, her husband Dev Alahan, and neighbour Brian Packham watched on as dark plumes of smoke billowed out of the cafe flat’s windows and a smoke alarm blared.

It wasn’t long before a panicked Carla arrived on the scene, but she was reassured Roy wasn’t inside as he’d gone out with Nina. As she desperately tried to get hold of the pair, Jodie appeared and realising what was going on, she rushed towards the cafe and let herself in, explaining Roy had returned early and was inside.

She found Mal inside, who didn’t appear to know Roy was upstairs, and the pair ended up dragging him out of the burning building. He was quickly scooped up by Carla and a paramedic and he was later seen in the hospital, with Carla holding vigil at his bedside.

During the follow-up visit to Weatherfield on Monday (April 13), Roy was joined by Carla, Nina and Lisa Swain as Bernie Winter paid a visit. He was worried about where he and Nina would live, with Carla quick to reassure him they could move in to No.6 until they get back on their feet.

Later, released from hospital and at the Connor-Swains, Carla confirmed to a heartbroken Roy that little could be recovered from the flat following the fire, though the café was said to be salvageable. She was, however, able to find Roy and his late wife, Hayley’s, wedding album.

But when he asked about letters she’d sent to him during her time in South Africa, Carla couldn’t say they had survived the blaze, but did hand him his beloved shopping bag in a bid to ease the blow. And the news left Corrie fans upset on Roy’s behalf.

@TheConnorSwains said: “Roy and Hayley’s wedding album survived but Hayley’s letters are gone I am not ok #Swarla #Corrie.” @RachelnzScott replied: “No, nor am I, Why did they have to do that, they could have had a few more things of Hayleys being saved.”

@Fake_TV_Chef echoed: “A business can be rebuilt, but the fire at Roy’s Rolls took years of memories and every tiny piece of Hayley he had left. Hopefully they can salvage some more stuff when they go back there again. #Swarla #Corrie.” @softswain cried: “Roy just wanting his letters off hayley no that’s truly so evil.” @missmollybruton added: “I hated Mal before but knowing he’s destroyed so many of Hayley’s things that Roy had kept…I wish he was one of the 5.”
