Speaking at the annual Mansion House dinner — a key event in the United Kingdom’s foreign policy calendar — Mr. Starmer emphasized that China is an indispensable partner, even as it remains the source of significant national security challenges.
According to the Prime Minister, China is “a nation of great scale, great ambition, and great ingenuity, playing a crucial role in global trade, technology, and governance.” However, he noted that Beijing simultaneously “poses real security risks” to the UK, requiring London to adopt a clear-eyed approach, avoiding extremes and steering clear of the “hot–cold cycles” seen in previous years.
Mr. Starmer’s remarks come as the British public is paying close attention to China’s plan to build a “mega embassy” at the Royal Mint Court site. The UK government is expected to make a final decision on December 10. The project has sparked controversy due to concerns over espionage and security implications, especially as the UK has previously faced a series of China-related spying allegations.
