Well, this is awkward. (Picture: ITV)

Once upon a time, Christina Boyd (Amy Robbins) and George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) were one of the most beloved pairing on Coronation Street. That’s all starting to change.

It all started so well.

The yummy mummy of gone-too-soon Daisy Midglely’ (Charlotte Jordan) shacked up with the local undertaker, George Shuttleworth, who was looking to mend his broken heart after his former flame Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) moved to Thailand.

Taking over from Eileen was always going to be some big shoes to fill, but Christina has been a wonderful partner to George – until now.

The happiest Undertaker in Manchester fell head over heels with his new girlfriend, even giving her a job in his business as a cleaner atShuttleworth’s Independent Funeral Services.

Since then, Christina has been there for George through all his ups and downs and, oh boy, has there been downs.

Earlier this year, George’s business was sued by the disgruntled daughter of a former client Annie King, whose mother Doris left him £10,000 in her will. She took George to the cleaners in court for supposedly taking advantage of her mother and did everything she could do publicly sabotage his business, mainly by spreading hateful reviews online. It was Christina who urged him to accept the money and fight Annie every step of the way.

Their real relationship challenge started with Theo Silverton’s murder investigation. Both George and Christina had tried their best to free their good friend Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) from the brutal clutches of his abusive partner Theo Silverton (James Cartwright). As Todd’s close friend, employer and father figure, George had one serious motive… which of course meant that Christina had one serious motive to cover for him.

Following the incident, Christina and George got entangled in a police investigation after Christina told a huge lie to the police to cover their backs – which made their friend and fellow suspect Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) look as guilty as sin.

Despite being given a grilling at the police station, she later claimed to have simply muddled up her timings and forgotten she stopped for petrol, which George accepted at the time.

Christina might spin a tall tale now and then. But that’s going to look like choir girl behaviour compared to what she’s about to do…

Earlier this week, Glenda Shuttleworth (Jodie Prenger) noticed Christina sneaking off to her car and alerted brother George to the situation. He was reluctant to think the worst of his missus, but was forced to confront Glenda’s doubts when she found further evidence. While Christina nipped to the loo, Glenda found a credit card statement belonging to Mary Taylor (Patti Clare) in her handbag.

George’s worst fears were confirmed when he was stunned to find her down the precinct embracing a man, Lenny (Joe Osbourne). Caught like a deer in headlights, Christine admitted to having a spending addiction. She’d set up a credit card in her ex-husband Lenny’s name. Not only that, but she’d defrauded Mary and Glenda had too. Although disgusted, George agreed to attend an addicts support group at the community centre with her to make amends.

Look out, Christina. You’re in Mary’s bad books. (Picture: ITV)

Unfortunately, Glenda and Mary were not as forgiving as George. Mary in particular, had met her fair share of liars and insisted that forgiveness needed to be earned.

But Mary’s not making it easy this week, when Christina fumes to discover that she’s holding a flash sale and flogging the household items which she bought on her spending spree.  Christina’s furious, but Mary points out they were bought on her card and therefore hers to sell. Christina grits her teeth…

The next day, Mary continues to make jibes at Christina over her fraudulent spending habits. Christina looks at the ‘package out for delivery’ message on her phone and her heart sinks. She’s spent a fortune and it’s too late to take it back…

It only gets worse from there. This weeks’ trips to the Cobbles sees Christina’s compulsive behaviour take a turn for the worse – with dire consequences for poor George.

A courier calls at No.11 with a parcel for Christina.  Deeply embarrassed, Christina admits to Todd that she’s still not got a grip on her spending.

When George spies the parcel, Todd quickly covers for her and makes out it’s his. But once they’re alone, Todd warns Christina that he won’t cover for her again and she shouldn’t be keeping secrets from George.
