Coronation Street fans have begun to speculate a shock death on the cobbles after a mysterious post leaked on social media. The ITV soap opera has seen the passing of several characters this year already, with the murder of PC Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) rocking the cobbles just over the spring.

Prior to that, Julie Carp (Katy Cavanagh) took her own life amid a battle with cancer just weeks after a much-anticipated return, and a special episode in January dealt with the stabbing of Mason Ratcliffe (Luca Toolan). Off-screen, homophobic church clerk Noah Hedley (Richard Winsor) died of a heart attack, and towards the end of last year, it was revealed that soap legend Les Battersby died in a freak accident at work, almost two decades after Bruce Jones had left the programme.

Fans of the show have seen numerous gruesome deaths over the programme’s 65-year history, and will likely remember the reign of terror that Richard Hillman (Brian Capron) unleashed on the show as the backstreet’s first serial killer in the early 2000s. Cowboy builder Pat Phelan (Connor McIntyre) then murdered Vinny Ashford, Luke Britton and Andy Carver during his time on the show, and Michelle Keegan‘s character Tina McIntyre was memorably killed off after she was thrown off the builder’s yard roof. Now viewers have speculated that another shock death is on the horizon.

But far more think that kind-hearted Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) has been killed off

In a screenshot leaked onto social media from a live video taken on the set of the programme, which is filmed at the MediaCity complex in Manchester, bunches of flowers can be seen laid out in front of one of the buildings on Rosamund Street. The post was captioned: “Who’s died?”

Immediately, fans poured into the comments section with their theories, with one hopeful that Becky Swain, the wife of Lisa Swain who recently came back from the dead after being part of a corrupt police cover-up, has actually met her demise for real this time. They wrote: “Hopefully that Becky but will probably be another decent one!”

Another remarked that that it was ‘hopefully a****wipe theo,’ who, as viewers will know, has been becoming more and more abusive towards boyfriend Todd Grimshaw over the last few months, controlling him at every opportunity. Another suggestion joked that it could be the famous cat who appears in the show’s title sequence, as they jokingly remarked: “Probably that ginger cat at the start of Corrie, as it must be 80 yrs old!”

But the overwhelming response was that Billy Mayhew, the local vicar who has been played by Daniel Brocklebank since 2014, had likely come to some sort of sticky end. One said: “This is probably Billys demise.”

Theo Silverton has been abusing his boyfriend Todd in recent months

Another wrote: “Billy is leaving. Im pretty certain Theo is offing him,” and several others poured in with the same theory. Earlier this year, it was claimed the archdeacon will be killed off in one of the biggest storylines of the festive period. According to sources, bosses don’t have any plans for Daniel’s character to return.

“There aren’t any plans to bring him back onto the soap so it makes sense make his exit the most impactful and explosive it can be,” a source told the Sun.

“It’s likely Billy will be a focus point of the Christmas/New Year storylines, with fans expected to be at the edge of their seats in the run-up.”

With little else known on his exit, fans will eagerly await any big storyline. Daniel, meanwhile previously admitted he was “sad” to be leaving the soap. He recently said: “I have been working on ‘Corrie’ for a quarter of my life.

“I have adored every minute I have been in that building and have never not looked forward to going into work. I love everyone who works on this show and whilst I am sad to be going, I am equally excited to see what the future holds.”

The actor’s partner, Jordan Coulthard later admitted the decision to leave the Corrie cobbles wasn’t one that was led by Daniel. He also branded his axing as a “huge mistake” by bosses.

According to MailOnline, he wrote on his Instagram Story: “Nothing to say. Not his decision. Huge mistake. I can’t believe we are having this conversation. No words can express how heartbroken I am for him.”

Producer Kate Brooks previously paid tribute to Daniel and his work on the show in a gushing tribute to the star. She said: “Billy will be involved in a major storyline over the coming months, which will see him tested in ways he never imagined, as friendships and his faith are pushed to the limit.

“We’re incredibly sad to bid farewell to Dan, who has been fantastic in some of ‘Corrie’s biggest storylines over the past few years, most notably Paul’s MND.

“An actor of immeasurable talent and skill, and an absolute treasure behind the scenes – he will be missed by all of us on the cobbles.”
