David Harbour has offered the biggest hint yet about what fans can expect from the long-awaited Stranger Things season 5 finale — and his words have sent the fandom into a frenzy. During a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor, who has played Chief Jim Hopper since the show’s debut in 2016, revealed that the series will end with what he calls “the best episode they’ve ever done.”
“I can be very critical of this show,” Harbour admitted. “But they land the plane — and it’s the best episode we’ve ever done.” The actor went on to describe an emotional cast read-through that left everyone in tears. “Halfway through, people started crying. Then, during the last 20 minutes, it was just uncontrollable crying — waves of people breaking down. Noah Schnapp was my favorite,” he said with a laugh.
The actor explained that the emotion wasn’t just about the script, but the journey behind it. The cast — Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Schnapp — have literally grown up on Stranger Things, spending nearly a decade in Hawkins, Indiana, and the terrifying parallel world of the Upside Down. “These kids started when they were 11 and 12,” Harbour said. “Now it’s ten years later, and the finale explores that idea — how they’ve grown, what they’ve lost, and what’s left to fight for. It’s beautiful.”
Harbour has long praised the Duffer Brothers’ storytelling, but his words this time carried the weight of finality. The fifth and final season is expected to deliver on years of emotional buildup and supernatural chaos, closing the book on one of Netflix’s most iconic originals. “It’s such a great episode, and it’s such a great season,” Harbour teased. “You guys will love it.”

In previous interviews, Harbour hinted that season 5 would be “bigger than anything we’ve done before,” with massive set pieces and emotional payoffs that will leave fans stunned. The Duffers, known for weaving nostalgia, horror, and heart into every frame, reportedly wrote a finale that ties together every storyline — from Eleven’s powers and Vecna’s vengeance to Hopper’s redemption arc and the fate of Hawkins itself.
For the cast, filming the end of Stranger Things isn’t just the close of a chapter — it’s the end of a defining era in their lives. What began as a small sci-fi experiment became a global phenomenon that redefined streaming television and catapulted its young stars to fame.
As Harbour put it, “It’s not just an ending to a story. It’s saying goodbye to our childhoods, too.”
If his emotional reaction — and those of the cast — are any indication, Stranger Things 5 won’t just break records. It might break hearts. Fans are bracing themselves for a finale that could be the most powerful, nostalgic, and devastating moment in Stranger Things history.
