Brandon Mendez Homer’s relationship with wife Maribel Martinez had an unconventional start.
The Pitt star recently caught up with PEOPLE on Monday, April 6, celebrating the opening night of Becky Shaw on Broadway. The play follows the story of a blind date that “spirals spectacularly off the rails,” prompting Mendez Homer to reflect on one of his wildest dating experiences.
“I’m married to the person [whose first date] went way off the rails, so I guess that’s crazy,” he reveals. “I did a reading in New York — it was a 72-hour reading — and by the end of it, we had a whirlwind romance.”
“And now we’re parents,” he adds. “So I guess it’s not off the rails exactly.”
Mendez Homer then jokes that his favorite part of being a dad to his young daughter is “the moments when I get to nap in the afternoon.”

Last month, Martinez took to Instagram to mark her fourth anniversary with the actor, paying tribute to the relationship in a heartfelt post.
“Can’t let March end without celebrating and loving on a special human who 4 years ago came into my life and completely turned up the frequency to 10000000000,” she wrote. “4 years ago in a rehearsal room in midtown Manhattan, Brandon stated more times then I can count that we should ‘work together.’”
She continued: “Since then we’ve produced readings and a show and village dinners, and are making the foundations of our little family, and created the most amazing being filled with sparkles and giggles and mischief and joy!”
“A couple months ago we made it legal!” Martinez went on to share. “But God had assigned us to ‘work together’ millennia ago. Love you Habibi.”

Mendez Homer has risen to fame over the past year after landing his role in the HBO hit series, The Pitt, in which he plays nurse Donnie Donahue. He tells PEOPLE that the job is “a blessing” that has changed his life in many ways.
“I mean, you get to do stuff like this, go to a Broadway show and see us in all different formats,” he notes. “It’s great. Everybody is super talented and they’re all good people. I feel fortunate, honestly.”
While the show is a medical drama with often tense scenes, Mendez Homer says that the cast’s dynamic off-camera couldn’t be more different.
“It’s great. It’s very playful. I think everybody is in good spirits,” he explains. “It’s cool. People are laid back. We just like making art and making something impactful in terms of storytelling.
The Pitt season 2 finale airs Thursday, April 16 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO Max.
