Coronation Street has confirmed that a legend’s death will be confirmed next week in Weatherfield, years after they were last seen on the famous cobbles.

This week, viewers of the ITV soap will see Steve McDonald receive worrying news about his father, Jim McDonald. Having taken a call, Steve tells girlfriend Cassie Plummer that his dad’s landlord is demanding £1,800 in unpaid rent and it would seem that his dad put him down as a guarantor.

Steve comes off the phone and tells Cassie and Rovers landlord Ben Driscoll that he’s spoken to one of Jim’s army mates and it would seem that his dad is in hospital and not expected to pull through.

Later, Cassie urges Steve to visit his dad but ex-wife Tracy Barlow disagrees and reminds Steve of all the grief Jim caused. When Steve discovers he’s got a flat battery, Ben offers to drive him to the hospital. Ben pulls up in the hospital car park but Steve remains in the car and admits that whilst he knows it’s his last chance to see his dad, he also knows he could be making a big mistake. Will Steve go through with it?

As the week continues, Ben invites Steve and Tim to join him at a County event, explaining that he got free tickets. Ben, Steve and Tim return to the Rovers in upbeat mood but leaving his phone on the bar, Steve heads off to play darts, unaware that his Dad is trying to call him.

Later, Steve wakes up on the sofa in the Rovers’ back room after a skinful the night before. He goes on to tell Cassie that he’s going to forget about his dad as he’s got everyone he needs; a lovely partner and a lovely daughter. Meanwhile, in the cab office, Mary Taylor excitedly shares the news with Tim that Cassie’s planning a big surprise for Steve tomorrow…

Now, new spoilers for next week’s Corrie has confirmed that Cassie is planning a surprise proposal, only for Steve to find out about Jim’s death just as she’s ready to pop the question.

According to the new details, Tim leads Steve towards Victoria Gardens but suddenly Steve’s phone rings to reveal the news that Jim has died. The proposal forgotten, Cassie pulls him in for a hug.

As they toast Jim’s memory in the Rovers, Tracy Barlow notices that Cassie’s dressed up and when she clocks her slipping something into Mary’s pocket, her suspicions are aroused. Will Tracy realise that Cassie was intending to propose? Meanwhile, Steve breaks down to Tim.

Later, as Steve and Cassie chat to Ben Driscoll about Jim’s funeral arrangements, Tracy realises that Steve is still blissfully unaware that Cassie intended to propose to him. Will she keep it that way?

The news about Jim comes after the actor who played him, Charlie Lawson, form 1989 to 2018, confirmed reports the character will be killed-off off-screen. The news of Jim’s death was first shared by RadioTimes earlier this month, with a source telling them that “Jim’s death will rock the boat for hapless Steve, who has finally found happiness with Cassie Plummer”, who is played by Claire Sweeney and was recently confirmed to be leaving the cobbles this summer.

Responding to the speculation following an outpouring of messages from fans, Charlie took to X (formerly Twitter), to address the news. In reply to a fan, he wrote: “I’ve known since early September, but I’ve always respected the confidentiality of the programme. It wasn’t a surprise, when I was informed last year.”

Charlie then later revealed that there will be no dramatic exit scenes and the 66-year-old described it as a “tragedy” for the once-great character. Speaking to The Sun, he said: “I will raise a glass to the old Jim, the one I loved and was proud of, who spoke his mind, with cracking, strong storylines in the Nineties.”
