With the arrival of winter, orchids require special care to ensure their health and blooming potential. Many orchids enter the winter season without flowers, but with the right approach, we can revive them and encourage the growth of new flower branches. One of the most effective ways to support orchids during winter is by providing them with natural fertilizers. Today, I will share three different methods for preparing and using natural fertilizers to boost orchid growth and flowering.
Preparing a Natural Fertilizer for Orchids
To begin, we will prepare a simple yet effective natural fertilizer. For this, I need a bowl of water and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). I add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water and stir until it is thoroughly dissolved. Baking soda is known for its ability to disinfect vegetables and fruits by removing chemicals. Once the baking soda is fully dissolved, I will add the primary ingredient of today’s fertilizer: tangerine peels.
Purifying and Preparing Tangerine Peels
Tangerine peels are rich in vitamin C, which helps accelerate root and leaf development in plants. However, since fruits often contain wax and harmful chemicals, I first soak the tangerine peels in the baking soda water for 30 minutes. After this soaking period, I wash the peels thoroughly with clean water to ensure they are fully purified. You can also scrub them with a sponge for added cleanliness.
Next, I peel the tangerines and cut the peels into thin slices. This process helps the vitamins and nutrients in the peels to transfer into the water more efficiently, making the fertilizer more potent.
Second Fertilizer Recipe: Eggshell Water
Moving on to our second fertilizer recipe, we will use eggshells. The inside of the eggshells must be completely clean before use. I had previously washed and dried them, and you can also dry them in the sun for best results. Once dry, I crush the eggshells into a fine powder.
Now, I proceed to the next stage. I place the crushed eggshells into an empty glass bottle and pour 300 ml of boiling water over them. This mixture is left to rest for half an hour to cool down. After it has cooled, I add an additional amount of tap water to it. The tap water I use is previously rested or purified water. In total, I obtain 2 liters of eggshell-infused water.
Next, I add the chopped tangerine peels to this water. The calcium in the eggshells and the vitamin C in the tangerine peels combine to create a highly beneficial fertilizer that promotes strong root and leaf development in orchids.
Once the ingredients are combined, I cover the jar and store it in a cool place for 24 hours to allow the nutrients to infuse properly.
Filtering and Using the Fertilizer
After 24 hours, I filter the fertilizer mixture to remove any solid residues and transfer it into a spray bottle for easy application. This fertilizer can be used in three different ways, which I will now demonstrate.
Method 1: Spraying on Orchid Leaves
In the first step, I spray the prepared fertilizer onto the orchid leaves, covering both the top and bottom surfaces. This helps the orchid leaves become more vibrant and shiny. Additionally, spraying the upper roots of the orchid provides extra nourishment.
When applying this method, it is essential to use a cotton ball to remove excess moisture between the leaves to prevent water from accumulating. This precaution is especially important during winter, as orchids should not remain wet for extended periods.
After spraying all the leaves, I allow the orchids to rest for at least an hour. This resting period helps the plant absorb the nutrients. Once the hour has passed, I gently wipe the leaves with a clean cotton cloth to ensure they are dry and healthy.
If you are growing orchids at home, it is crucial to take extra precautions during the winter months. Keeping the leaves dry and ensuring proper air circulation will help prevent issues such as rot and fungal infections.
Method 2: Root Support with Natural Fertilizer
In the second step, I support the orchid roots by pouring at least eight tablespoons of the prepared fertilizer into each orchid pot. This application provides essential nutrients that accelerate root and leaf development.
You can use this fertilizer for all your houseplants, including those in your living room or any other indoor plants with green leaves. Regular application—once a month—is enough to keep orchids and other plants thriving. This method is particularly effective in encouraging flowerless plants to bloom quickly.
After applying this process, I monitor the development of my orchids over the months and share the progress with my viewers.
Observing Orchid Growth and Flowering
Over the months, I have noticed that my orchids respond exceptionally well to these natural fertilizers. They quickly grow new flower branches, and in some cases, multiple flower branches emerge instead of just one. This demonstrates the effectiveness of these natural methods in supporting orchid health and flowering.
Since we are in winter, it is important to place orchids in a location that receives plenty of light and is close to a window. Proper lighting is essential for their development, especially when encouraging new flower branches to grow.
Final Tips for Winter Orchid Care
To summarize, here are the key steps to ensure your orchids thrive during the winter season:
-
- Use Natural Fertilizers: Prepare and apply natural fertilizers using tangerine peels and eggshells to provide essential nutrients.
- Spray the Leaves: Spraying orchid leaves with the fertilizer helps them stay vibrant and supports overall plant health.
-
- Support the Roots: Regularly applying fertilizer to the roots promotes growth and helps flowerless orchids bloom.
- Ensure Proper Lighting: Place orchids near a window with plenty of light to encourage flower branch development.
- Avoid Excess Moisture: Wipe off excess moisture from the leaves to prevent fungal issues during winter.
By following these steps, you can successfully care for your orchids throughout the winter season and enjoy their beautiful blooms. I hope you found this guide helpful! If you liked this article, feel free to share it with other orchid enthusiasts and support my content.
