Coronation Street fans told ‘sorry’ as ITV soap expert delivers cast update
An update for fans of the ITV soap who wondered about Doctor Vincent Harper
Coronation Street fans have been issued an apology by an expert on the long-running show as they offered an update on Doctor Vincent Harper, a new character that recently caught their attention.
During last Wednesday’s (January 7) episode of the ITV soap, viewers saw a nervous David and Shona Platt preparing for her complex surgery, which saw her give birth to their daughter who was found to have a mass on her neck during an earlier pregnancy scan.
While they had plans in place to undergo the surgery when the time for their baby’s arrival came, they were caught up in the catastrophic incident, which featured in the special Corrie and Emmerdale crossover episode, Corriedale.
The multi-vehicle pile-up left the lives of those from Weatherfield and the Dales at risk, and it left Shona having to deliver her baby earlier than expected.
So, in last week’s special episode, Corrie focused solely on David and Shona’s journey as they prepared for the complex surgery that could save the life of their baby daughter. They were upset when they discover that the consultant surgeon who was due to carry out the operation was stuck outside of the UK.
A replacement, Vincent Harper, was soon brought on board, leaving Shona and David concerned as to whether he’s up to the job. Before heading to the hospital, Vincent was seen in Roy’s Rolls. He seemingly upset Bernie as he referenced Billy Mayhew, with his recent death in the tragic crash on the front of the newspaper.
He also rubbed a stressed-out David up the wrong way when they went for the same car parking space in the hospital car park. The hairdresser later apologised after the surgeon carried out the successful operation and safe delivery of his and Shona’s baby, whom they decided to call Harper after him.
Vincent, who had travelled from Bristol on his birthday to carry out the surgery, later returned to the cafe, where Bernie had decided to close up early. When he enquired why, she ended up telling him that Billy was her son-in-law, before giving him his pie and cup of tea on the house.
Corrie fans were left confused by the prominence of the new character and wondered if he was going to become a more regular character, even considering a link between him and a recently departed Billy.
But, there’s bad news for those who were hoping for a return of the on-screen medical professional. ITV This Morning’s ‘Queen of Soaps’ Sharon Marshall confirmed on Wednesday’s (January 14) show that he wouldn’t be returning before commenting on X (formerly Twitter): “As we just said on air, sorry to break it but Dr Harper’s not a returning character in Corrie. Have lost count of the number of hopeful people asking.. he made quite the splash!”
When one fan replied: “I’m so confused whyyy did we find out so much about him and his kids birthday cake it really stood out to me as strange,” Sharon commented back: “Yeah he had a big part for not a big part, right? But it was just a lovely guest role..”
