At its core, even with all the time travel and historical elements, Outlander has always been a family drama. There could be heavy emphasis on the word “drama,” as the Fraser clan has never been a conventional one. It’s both been one separated by war and time, but fate seemingly almost always brings them back together. That is the setup for a long-awaited meeting in the fourth episode of season eight, one that had to happen before the show’s conclusion.
In last week’s episode, “Abies Fraseri,” tension has come to a head on Fraser’s Ridge as Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) discovers that his new neighbor, Captain Charles Cunningham (Kieran Bew), is actually plotting with the British Army under his nose. Cunningham admits he is under direct orders from Major Patrick Ferguson to recruit backcountry men from places like Fraser’s Ridge to enlist and fight against the colonists in the American Revolution.
Brianna (Sophie Skelton) also received a letter from Lord John Grey (David Berry), who has asked her to come down to Savannah to paint a portrait of Amaranthus (Carla Woodcock) and her infant son. While Jamie was adamant against Brianna and Roger (Richard Rankin) going anywhere near Lord John’s house given the two men’s falling out, they have gone anyway.
In the clip seen below from episode four, titled “Muskets, Liberty, and Sauerkraut,” Brianna has made it to Lord John’s house, where she meets again with her brother, William Ransom (Charles Vandervaart). Except this time, he knows who she really is.
Brianna and William previously met once before, as depicted in episode two of season seven, “The Happiest Place on Earth,” although only Brianna knew the truth about their shared father at the time. “She also never thought she’d meet him, and managing to see William is just a beautiful moment for Bree, but also quite bittersweet because she can’t just have a candid conversation with him and actually get to know her brother,” Skelton told T&C in 2023 about filming the first meeting. “But I don’t think that there’s too much sadness in that. I think it’s more just feeling grateful that she gets to meet him at all.”
The fourth episode will premiere globally on Friday, March 27 at 12 a.m. eastern on the Starz app and all Starz streaming platforms, such as Amazon Prime, Sling TV, and more. Episodes will continue to drop weekly on Fridays through May 15, with a skip week on May 1.
