Farage Highlights Executive’s Links to Plaid Cymru as ‘Living Proof’ of Political Skew at the Top of the Corporation
Nigel Farage, the outspoken leader of Reform UK, has launched a blistering attack on the BBC, accusing the national broadcaster of being “infected with left-wing bias” after drawing attention to the political background of one of its most senior executives.
In a video message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Mr Farage specifically targeted Rhuanedd Richards, the current interim director of nations, highlighting her previous high-profile role within Welsh politics.
The £190,000 Accusation
Mr Farage pointed to Ms Richards’s history with the Welsh nationalist party, Plaid Cymru, claiming her appointment at the broadcaster’s highest levels served as undeniable evidence of a deep-seated political skew within the organisation.
“Rhuanedd Richards was the chief executive of Plaid,” Mr Farage stated in his video. “She worked, during the Labour-Plaid coalition, for the government of Wales.”
He then juxtaposed her political history with her current highly paid role at the BBC: “She’s now a director of BBC Wales, on just over £190,000 a year. There is living proof that, right the way through to the top, the BBC is infected with left-wing bias.”
The accusation reignites the long-running, intensely debated issue of political impartiality at the BBC, which is funded by the licence fee.
BBC Defence: ‘Wholly Committed to Upholding Impartiality’
In response to the fierce criticism from the Reform UK leader, the BBC issued a robust defence of their executive, emphasising her long service and commitment to the organisation’s core values.
A BBC spokesperson confirmed Ms Richards’s history but stood by her professional conduct: “Rhuanedd Richards has worked for the BBC since 2018 and has been director of BBC Wales since 2021. She is currently interim director for the nations.”
The statement stressed that Ms Richards has always been transparent about her background and is focused solely on her current duties: “Rhuanedd has always been open about her career history and is wholly committed to upholding the impartiality of the BBC.”
Richards’s Career Path
The controversy stems from Ms Richards’s career trajectory, which saw her move from journalism into politics and then back to the public broadcaster.
Ms Richards began her career as a journalist with BBC Wales before moving into government and politics, becoming Plaid Cymru’s chief executive between 2011 and 2016.
She returned to the BBC in 2018, rising quickly through the ranks to become the head of BBC Wales in 2021, and taking up her current interim role as director of nations in June of this year.
The clash between Farage’s accusation and the BBC’s defence ensures the question of political impartiality at the Corporation remains firmly in the national spotlight.
