Fans of Ricky Gervais were recently met with unexpected news: his long-term partner, bestselling author Jane Fallon, has been diagnosed with breast cancer—despite having no prior symptoms.
In a candid social media update, the 65-year-old writer initially alarmed followers with the words: “Bit of news… (no one panic)”. She quickly reassured them, however, that the cancer was caught at a very early stage, with an “excellent” prognosis.
A chance discovery during a routine check
What makes Jane’s story particularly striking is that she experienced no warning signs at all. The diagnosis came after a routine mammogram just before Christmas.A vigilant radiographer noticed something unusual, prompting further tests including biopsies and an MRI. After thorough examination, doctors were able to pinpoint the affected area and move forward with a treatment plan.
Jane admitted:
“It’s been a lot, I’m not going to lie… but I’m getting incredible care.”
Preparing for surgery
The novelist shared that she is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming weeks, and is eager to get it “over and done with” so she can return to normal life.
For now, she’s taking things slowly—stepping back from the spotlight and focusing on simple comforts like audiobooks and jigsaw puzzles. True to her personality, she’s also keeping her spirits up with humor, joking about her “teddy bear doctor” and “cat nurse” keeping watch.
Support pours in from famous friends
Following her announcement, an outpouring of support flooded in. Fellow comedian Dawn French and TV host Alan Carr were among those sending love and encouragement during this challenging time.
A 40-year love story without marriage
Amid the health update, many have also reflected on Jane’s enduring relationship with Ricky Gervais—one of the UK’s most iconic long-term couples.
The pair met in 1982 as students and have been together ever since. Though they’ve never married, Ricky has openly shared his views:
“We’re married in every meaningful way… we just don’t need a ceremony.”
They’ve also chosen not to have children, maintaining a relatively private life despite their fame.
