Fans have fallen head over heels for Tom Read Wilson during his time on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, captivated by his gentle warmth, lyrical way of speaking and unmistakable accent. But as the jungle journey unfolded, so did questions — and now, Tom is finally setting the record straight.
From the origins of his voice to long-standing myths about his family, and even speculation surrounding his love life, the First Dates star has quietly addressed the topics viewers have been most curious about.
Tom has often credited his distinctive voice to his upbringing — particularly his father, an English teacher with a deep love of storytelling. While chatting in camp, he explained how language and rhythm shaped the way he speaks, describing how stories were part of everyday life growing up. “He made everything into stories,” Tom shared. “I love the lyricism of it.”
However, attention quickly turned to a story Tom once told on 8 Out of 10 Cats about how his parents met — a version that later caused confusion and concern within his own family. On the show, Tom suggested his parents met while his father was teaching at a school his mother attended, when she was 18 and he was 34.
That account was later corrected by his father, Crispin, who described the retelling as “factually incorrect.” He clarified that although both families lived on the grounds of Bradfield College — where he taught English and Tom’s grandfather taught French — Tom’s mother, Juliette, was never his student. Their relationship began after she had left school and was studying at college, and they married in May 1986. Tom was born later that same year.
Despite the awkward moment, Tom has been open about his deep affection for both parents. Now 39, he has said he remains very close to them, even though they are no longer together. He has described his mother — a French teacher — as “wonderful, zesty and rather naughty,” and has spoken warmly about his father, who has since remarried.
Beyond family history, fans have also been eager to learn more about Tom’s romantic life. During his time in the jungle, he confirmed he is currently single, joking to Lisa Riley that while he’s good at “finding men,” he’s less successful at “keeping them.” With his trademark humour, he even quipped that Kelly Brook would be his ideal woman.
In a more reflective moment, Tom previously explained that he is drawn to partners who are radically different from himself. “Two-thirds of beauty lies in fascination,” he said in a past interview, adding that discovering someone unlike you can be endlessly compelling — a comment that has fuelled curiosity about whether a “new boyfriend” could be on the horizon.
Following the jungle finale, Tom also made headlines for his humility, insisting that Angryginge was the rightful winner of the series. Speaking on Good Morning Britain, he admitted he would have felt a “great pang of guilt” had he taken the crown himself, praising his fellow finalist as “the titan of the trials.”
Looking ahead, Tom has made it clear that he doesn’t plan to be boxed into one path. A former Celebrity Mastermind champion, he says he wants a career filled with variety — writing, theatre, presenting and performance — all coexisting side by side.
For fans who have spent weeks wondering about the man behind the voice, Tom Read Wilson’s journey has offered something quietly inspiring: a reminder that it’s okay to be misunderstood, to correct the record, and to keep evolving — on your own terms.
From accent to affection, Tom isn’t hiding anymore — he’s simply being himself.
