She’s Finally Here! Jenna Bush Hager’s Year-Long Search Ends in an Emotional Reveal as Sheinelle Jones Takes the Permanent Fourth-Hour Throne on TODAY

After nearly a full year of rotating through more than 60 guest co-hosts, Jenna Bush Hager has finally found her permanent partner for the fourth hour of TODAY — and the reveal brought tears, hugs, and a wave of emotion that viewers won’t soon forget.

On December 9, Jenna officially announced that Sheinelle Jones will be stepping into the permanent co-host role on the newly renamed TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle, marking a major new chapter for the beloved morning show. The refreshed program will officially debut on January 12, making Sheinelle the first permanent co-host since Hoda Kotb’s departure from the fourth hour.

Introducing Sheinelle on-air, Jenna couldn’t hide her emotion.

“You all know her — she’s an extraordinary broadcaster,” Jenna said. “But more importantly, she represents exactly what this show stands for.”

For Sheinelle, the moment felt surreal.

“To have a show like this is beyond anything I ever dreamed,” she said. “This is the real deal — and I get to do it with Jenna.”

As the two embraced in a long, emotional hug, Jenna admitted she could barely hold back tears.

“I knew I was going to cry before you even walked out,” she said. “I tried not to.”

“You couldn’t write this script,” Sheinelle replied.

At 47, Sheinelle will officially step away from her role on the Third Hour of TODAY, where she currently co-hosts alongside Craig Melvin, Al Roker, and Dylan Dreyer, who will continue in their roles at 9 a.m.

Meanwhile, TODAY executives wasted no time praising the powerful pairing. Executive Vice President Libby Leist and executive producer Talia Parkinson-Jones called the move “an exciting new chapter” for the fourth hour.

“Jenna and Sheinelle are two extraordinary talents who grew within the ranks of TODAY,” they said. “They are beloved for their authenticity, warmth, and genuine connection with our audience.”

They also highlighted Sheinelle’s more than 11-year legacy at NBC News, praising her standout interviews, her unmistakable on-air presence, and even her legendary Halloween impersonations of icons like Beyoncé and Tina Turner.

Sheinelle’s journey to this moment has been deeply emotional. When she guest co-hosted TODAY with Jenna & Friends back in September, she joked that the experience felt like a first date.

“Hopefully this is one of those dates where you walk away and think, ‘OK, I hope she calls me tomorrow,’” she teased at the time.

“You’re coming back,” Jenna promised.

That appearance came during one of the most difficult chapters of Sheinelle’s life. Just months earlier, she had returned to work after the devastating loss of her husband, Uche Ojeh, who passed away from brain cancer in May at just 45 years old. The couple had been married for 17 years and shared three children.

Speaking candidly on-air in September about returning to work, Sheinelle described the emotional weight she carried.

“My coach was gone. My life partner,” she said. “The days after my first week back were tough because this is my new normal.”

In one of the most touching moments of that episode, Jenna secretly arranged for six of Sheinelle’s closest friends — known as “The Secret Society of Sheinelle” — to surprise her live on air.

“I am in shock,” Sheinelle said through tears. “These women are my village. These are the girls who put me back together.”

On the day of her official co-host announcement, Sheinelle revealed she wore one of her late husband’s shirts beneath her outfit.

“I said a little prayer,” she shared, “and told myself, ‘Let’s go sit next to not just my friend — but my sister.’”

Jenna echoed the sentiment.

“There’s nobody I’d rather sit next to,” she said.

That morning, the first people Sheinelle told about the news were her children — Kayin, 16, and 13-year-old twins Clara and Uche.

“They were so happy for me,” she said. “There was joy in our home again — and we needed that joy. When I came back to work, I talked about fighting for my joy. This is what it looks like.”

Sheinelle was one of the original 60 rotating guest co-hosts who joined Jenna after TODAY with Jenna & Friends launched on January 13. The parade of guest stars included an extraordinary mix of Hollywood royalty, pop icons, comedians, and even political giants.

Early on, Taraji P. Henson kicked things off and later returned for another episode. Michelle ObamaJohn LegendCiaraCardi BSheryl Crow, and Kelsea Ballerini all took turns in the chair. Stars like Scarlett Johansson, Halle Berry, Regina Hall, Rosie Perez, Henry Winkler, and many others also joined Jenna.

The laughs never stopped either. Past and present Saturday Night Live stars such as Amy Poehler, Bowen Yang, Mikey Day, Chloe Fineman, Ana Gasteyer, Ego Nwodim, and Cheri Oteri brought the humor, alongside comedians like Chelsea Handler, Tiffany Haddish, Wanda Sykes, Leanne Morgan, and Nikki Glaser.

Even Jenna’s husband, Henry Hager, made multiple guest appearances.

Despite the constant rotation, TODAY executives praised the team for keeping the show fresh, lively, and emotional throughout the entire year.

“The show never skipped a beat,” they said. “Jenna went on first dates in front of millions — and the audience loved every moment.”

Now, after months of anticipation, chemistry tests, laughter, tears, and healing, the fourth hour finally has its permanent home again — with two women who call each other not just colleagues, but sisters.

For fans of TODAY, the waiting is over. A new era officially begins in January.
