After the massive success of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, HBO couldn’t resist making another story set in the vicious world of Westeros. Regaling viewers with the story of a hedge knight and a runaway kid, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms brings back all the good parts of the show we dearly missed.

What’s more, the spin-off show might also bring back a beloved character that appeared in Game of Thrones, Maester Aemon. Since he is Aegon aka Egg’s older brother, there is a huge possibility that we will see a younger version of Aemon in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. In a recent episode, Aemon was (almost) name-dropped, and we witnessed Egg’s true identity revealed.

Though the creators have not revealed anything about Aemon’s appearance on the show, it will not be a long shot to assume that his character deserves a presence. He is a tangible link for viewers between A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and Game of Thrones.

Who Was Maester Aemon in Game of Thrones?

A man of great wisdom and foresight, Maester Aemon guided poor souls who ended up at the Wall in Game of Thrones. His character was shown as impeccably knowledgeable and courageous, even in the face of the worst adversary. When Jon Snow ends up at the Wall, Aemon comes to his aid and supports young Snow.

Without Aemon, Snow would have been left to fend for himself. Aemon also acts as Samwell Tarly’s mentor, who later joins the Citadel and becomes a Maester himself. Not only was he an inspiration to the people at the Wall, but his guidance and advice were widely sought after.

In Game of Thrones, too, Aemon mentions Egg and remembers him quite fondly. In fact, his last words as he took his dying breath were, “Egg, I dreamed I was old.” This shows how close the two brothers actually were, and exploring this bond grow in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a golden opportunity for the showrunners.

In the Tales of Dunk and Egg novels, after both Aerion and Daemon pass away, Aemon is to be crowned king. However, with no desire to rule a kingdom or be king, he declines, and his younger brother Aegon is crowned king instead. What’s more, Aemon selflessly joins the Night’s Watch to ensure Aegon can rule in peace. If this is not brotherly love, then what is?

If showrunner Ira Parker had his way, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms would run for a good 12-15 seasons. But till then, we will be happy with what we can get. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is officially returning for another season of battles, betrayals, and booze. The show is tentatively set to release in 2027, but it could be delayed due to production schedules.

HBO has not announced a release date just yet, but shooting for the season began in December 2025, so it should be a while before it wraps (via Variety). The second novella, The Sworn Sword, will form the foundation for season 2 as we explore Dunk and Egg’s journey further in Westeros.

Till then, stay tuned to watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episodes release weekly, streaming on HBO Max.
