Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard recalls touching memory with late Deirdre Barlow star
Anne Kirkbride died in 2015 following her exit from the ITV soap a few months prior
Coronation Street legend Beverley Callard has recalled a touching memory with late friend and co-star Anne Kirkbride who played Deirdre Barlow in the ITV soap for 42 years.
The actress opened up earlier this year that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She has since been keeping her fans updated on her cancer journey. She often updates her followers on her cancer journey, particularly after her time on I’m a Celebrity South Africa finally aired on ITV.
As she prepared for her next hospital appointment, Beverley recalled a memory with former co-star Anne Kirkbride. Anne Kirkbride played the iconic character Deirdre Barlow in Coronation Street for 42 years. She made her first appearance on November 20, 1972, and her final episode aired on October 8, 2014.
She died in 2015 aged 60 after a short illness, her husband confirmed. At the time, her co-star William Roache, who played her husband Ken Barlow said: “I feel Anne’s loss so personally having worked closely with her for over 40 years. She was such a loving and vibrant person. You always knew she was there because her laugh was never far away.
“She was an impeccable performer with superb comedy timing and an immense gift for really heightened drama. We had some rows over the years as Ken and Deirdre and it was wonderful to play those scenes opposite her. Coronation Street has lost one of its iconic characters and Anne will be greatly missed.”
“I’m all ready for the hospital, I will let you know how it goes, but I must tell you this. I put this top on, and I do have great difficulty throwing clothes away. I am such a hoarder with clothes and shoes, and this made me smile because my friend Anne Kirkbride chose this years ago.
“You know who she is, she played Deirdre in Coronation Street and she was one of my greatest friends. We went shopping in Kendal’s in Manchester and she chose this and said, ‘Beverley that’s a you top’, so it made me smile.”
Beverley’s video came just before her recent health update in which she informed followers that Doctors told her she should have begun her radiotherapy treatment before now.
Speaking in a new video posted to Instagram on Tuesday evening, she said: “Well I went to the hospital today at quarter past three, and they all seemed very nice, obviously they’re new to me.
“They are a little concerned because they think I should’ve started the radiotherapy before now but of course because we moved house, it took a while for my medical records to come from England to Ireland et cetera but they’ve all arrived [now].”
She added :”I’ve got to go back on Thursday morning to see some more doctors and medical people and then they will begin it soon so it went okay, it went okay. So I will keep you updated.”
