Cassie Plummer (Claire Sweeney) has come a long, long way in Coronation Street.
Arriving as a desperate woman, deep in the throes of addiction, who’s chaotic and dangerous lifestyle proved to be one of the very few chinks in the armour of her hard faced mum, Evelyn Plummer (Maureen Lipman).
Although she was reunited with her long-lost son, Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall), she was still a deeply damaged woman and as she began caring for Ken Barlow (William Roache), she began lacing his tea with antihistamine in the hopes it’d increase his reliance on her, before ultimately stealing from him.
Thus began her everlasting feud with perennial nemesis and Weatherfield’s Queen of mean, Ken’s daughter, Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford), who tried – but failed – to bring on a relapse, tempting Cassie with a bag of drugs.
Recognising that she never intended to truly harm him, Ken forgave Cassie, and eventually, the residents of the street began to follow suit. She reunited with Tyrone and even sparked a romance with Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson).
You know, Steve? Tracy’s ex-husband Steve! Yeah, that one.
It’s fair to say that absolutely nothing has improved between Cassie and Tracy; actually, the hate has only grown. When Cassie tried to propose to Steve, a proposal that was utterly destroyed by the death of Steve’s dad, Tracy revelled in the failure.
While Steve and Cassie are stronger than ever, the presence of toxic Trace is an ongoing source of tension, and next week sees Cassie decide to prove once and for all that Steve is hers.
As poor Tyrone and Fiz (Jennie McAlpine) head to the Rovers for a romantic night and a cheeky bottle of prosecco, the mood is instantly destroyed by the arrival of the street’s least romantic triumvirate, Cassie, Steve and Tracy.
Tyrone watches on as Cassie tells Steve that she’s sick to the back teeth of Tracy’s nasty mouth and her seemingly unending attempts to drive a tram-sized wedge into their relationship.
In the face of his mums upset, Tyrone suggests that if she truly loves Steve, she’ll have to accept that Tracy is part of the package as the mother of his daughter, Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney).
While that might be true, Cassie has another idea. She wants to claim Steve as her man once and for all, and settles on an idea she’s had previously: she’s going to get him down the aisle.
As she and Steve take to the cab office, Cassie is utterly determined and as she takes to one knee, she pops the big question, a question Steve himself has asked many, many times: will he marry her?
Steve’s jaw drops to the floor as he takes in the scene, but is he ready to make an eighth trip down the aisle? With Cassie shortly set to leave, we’re not sure this proposal will have a fairy tale ending…
