Through the Eyes of Love

Nikki’s (Melody Thomas Scott) medical dilemma continued this week as she underwent surgery for her blindness. It’s amazing how a single sentence like that can grip the attention of Y&R fans everywhere, and it doesn’t contain words like “AI,” “Newman Enterprises,” and “Summers Conglomorate.”
The Newman clan has spent much of the last year or so worried about Cane Ashby’s (Billy Flynn) AI program, which Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) usurped to get control of Victor’s company. Let’s not forget about Matt Clark’s (Roger Howarth) reign of terror either. The man had more lives than Wile E. Coyote. He got in car wrecks, escaped the legal system, and survived a blow to the head administered by his ex-wife, Sienna (Tamara Braun), that left him with amnesia.
Victor (Eric Braeden) and Nikki came into conflict over Victor keeping Matt Clark around on the ranch so he could use him against Cane. No wonder Nikki developed a mass that impacted her optic nerve!
While it was “nice” to see the Newmans deal with an old-fashioned soap opera malady like blindness. We saw Victor use his wealth and his private jet to make sure Nikki got the best doctor possible. What better sign could there be that he loves her more than anything! The look on Victor’s face when he realized Nikki might lose her sight or her life was a reminder that these two share an epic love story.
There’s nothing like seeing a family gather by the hospital bedside of a beloved family member. Y&R gave us that big time as Victoria (Amelia Heinle), Nicholas (Joshua Morrow), and other relatives stand vigil as Nikki fought for her life.
Dear Diane

Last week, we watched Diane (Susan Walters) try to outwit her captor, Dr. Laurence Markham (Jere Burns), Patty’s (Stacy Haiduk) partner in crime. Walters turned in a tour de force as she did her best to make sure that Markham’s “therapy” was working.
Diane and Jack don’t have a perfect relationship. They went through a lot to become the happy couple they are today. Diane did fake her death years ago (thankfully, Y&R retconned Diane’s death into a fakeout — she never should have been killed off!). And it appeared, at least in Diane’s mind, that Jack could have handled things differently when he was trapped on the yacht with Patty.
But there was no way that Patty and her cohort were going to successfully chip away at Diane and Jack’s love. While Diane managed to stall the evil doctor, Jack and Kyle took a more direct approach by scoping out Markham’s home.
We had money on Kyle getting trapped in Markham’s home, too. Sometimes the bad guys are smart enough to employ some muscle even if the good guys aren’t! Diane managed to use some of Markham’s sedatives against him by drugging some appetizers upon which Markham feasted.
Kyle didn’t have to resort to punching him out. He used Markham’s keys to open the door, and he and Diane took off to freedom! First, though, Diane turned to Markham and read him for filth! For Markham’s sake, he was passed out and won’t remember Diane’s words because she reamed the whackadoodle for trying to get her to turn against her husband!
Bloody Mess

Diane certainly appreciates Kyle coming to her aid, but she likely would have gotten free on her own anyway because her drugged appetizers worked on their own. She could have used the keys to escape, but Kyle’s car certainly came in handy!
Jack, however, wasn’t as crafty. He reveled in blasting Patty, telling her that her plan to extricate Diane from his life had failed. Jack must be partially psychic because he appeared to know how almost exactly things were unfolding across town. He could have so easily been tipping his hand. Fortunately, his confidence in Diane and Kyle’s ability to emerge victorious was well-founded. Jack used Patty’s phone to call Markham’s, and he and Diane were reunited by phone.
Jack ordered Patty out, which was the right thing to do, but we were certainly reminded why Jack should have employed some security! Patty returned and got her revenge against her ex-husband. If she couldn’t have him, then nobody could!
Patty took a knife and stabbed Jack right in his side. Blood spilled everywhere! Our first thought is for Jack. Will he survive Patty’s attack? Will the police pick up Patty and Dr. Markham? Will Mrs. Martinez, the housekeeper whose name we often hear (but never see), be able to get all the blood out of the carpets Diane installed when she redecorated the house?
It’s too bad Patty went down this violent path. We were quite intrigued when Patty, in Diane’s nightmare, referenced a child that she and Jack had. If there is a daughter out there that Jack doesn’t know about, she could be the next threat to Jack and Diane’s marriage. Assuming he lives!
